What is Reiki?

Traditional Usui Reiki

The Japanese word Reiki is usually translated as ‘Universal Life-Force Energy’. Reiki is a safe, gentle, non-intrusive ‘hands on healing’ technique, which uses spiritual energy, transferred from practitioner to client, to treat physical ailments without using pressure, manipulation or massage. However, it is much more than a physical therapy. It is a holistic system for balancing, healing and harmonizing all aspects of the person on all levels; physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

It can also be used to encourage personal growth and spiritual awareness, as it lifts the veil of the illusionary world; bringing an understanding of the self and others, and the greater meaning for life.

It is believed that the technique is thousands of years old, originally came from the Mu people  – from the time of Atlantis and Lemuria, passed to Tibetan Buddhist monks and rediscovered by a Japanese Buddhist priest, Mikao Usui (1865- 1926), who, after many years of study, discovered a way of accessing and using this healing energy, and of passing this ability on to other people.

Rei – Spiritual Wisdom

The word “Rei” is translated as the ‘wisdom and knowledge of all the Universe’ or ‘atmosphere of the Divine’. It means the Higher Intelligence that guides the creation and functioning of the Universe; the wisdom that comes from God (or the Source, the Creator, the Universe or All That Is), which is all knowing, and which understands the need and the cause of all problems and difficulties, and how to heal them.

Reiki is universal life energy

Ki – the Life Force

Ki or Chi in Chinese, Prana in Sanskrit, Mana in Hawaiian, is the vital Life-Force energy that flows through all living things. It has been identified by all cultures and consequently has a variety of names. Ki surrounds and animates all life and is the primary source of our thoughts, emotions and spiritual existence.

Martial artists use Ki in physical and mental development. Shamans, past and present, have used the same energy for spiritual development and awareness as well as healing and manifestation. All healers, regardless of discipline, employ Ki. It is the non-physical energy that can be accumulated by the body, and guided by the will.

How does Reiki work?

Person giving reikiReiki energy is a unique vibrational frequency that is channelled from the Universal Life-Force, through the practitioner’s hands to the client. This energy transference goes to the deepest level; the ‘higher self’ or ‘soul self’ of the recipient. This brings about healing to an aspect of the body to where it is most needed.

Reiki also works to cleanse the aura of negativity and impurities. Why is this so important? Because we want to attract positive people and situations into our life, rather than negative ones. Over time, our aura becomes "dirty"; this is due to various negative factors in our environment (emotional, mental and physical). When this happens, we attract negative energy, instead of positive energy because ‘like attracts like’. Illness and disease is first registered in the energy field (the aura) before it manifests in the physical body so it makes sense to ensure our aura is clean at all times. Prevention is always better than cure!

What are the benefits of Reiki?

Reiki has several basic effects: it brings about deep relaxation, balances the whole body, clears energy blockages, detoxifies the system, provides new vitality in the form of healing universal life energy, and increases the vibrational frequency of the body.

Reiki benefitsBody organs, the skin and protective systems such as the immune system are improved. The energy channels are opened up to allow the body to deal effectively and naturally with both stress and the build-up of toxins.

Long-term practice of Reiki will restore the general condition of the body as it cleanses the auric field thus preventing any imbalances or impurities from building up in the subtle bodies. We are learning more about how weaknesses show up in the energy field (the aura) before there is ever any evidence of it on the physical level.

Reiki is also useful when recovering from an illness, as it will provide the additional energy required recovering from the illness. This can be a very useful adjunct for anyone taking a course of drugs as it can help reduce some of the side effects. Assisting the body in the recovery after drug therapy, chemotherapy, after surgery or serious illness, such as cancer, to speed up the healing process.

In all of these cases, Reiki supplies the body with extra life energy, enabling the body to bounce back more quickly from the burdens of surgery, toxicity, and stress in the body. It will also reinforce the effects of any other method of natural healing. It can be used as a supplementary therapy as it is a truly complementary system of treatment.

Some of the benefits include:

Revitalise Energy - Relieve Depression - Promote Good Health - Reduce Stress - Improve Circulation - Eliminate Toxins - Balance the System - Aid Relaxation – Boost Immunity

Reiki Training

Reiki is an amazingly simple technique to learn. The ability to use Reiki is not taught in the usual sense, but is transferred to the student during a Reiki class. This ability is passed on during an ‘attunement’ given by a Reiki master which opens the crown, heart and palm chakras in a unique way and allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of ‘life force energy’ to improve one’s health, or the health of others, and enhance the quality of life.
